Now that Netflix has movies streaming to the xbox, Wii and Playstation 3, as well as mailing out DVDs and Blu-Rays, they are moving into the pay TV world to compete directly with channels like HBO, Showtime and Starz.
Netflix will be streaming major theatrical releases during the “pay TV window” when first-run movies usually hit cable channels.
Netflix has struck a deal with Relativity Media to bring new movies to the Netflix stream just months after the DVD release.
Relativity is a major production company with recent movies like MacGruber, Get Him to the Greek, the Christian Bale/Mark Wahlberg drama The Fighter and Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch under their belt. It is only the beginning, but it is a definite step in the right direction for Netflix and freedom from cable.
